Cars and vans aged 3 years and older are mandated by law to undergo an annual examination called the MOT, with a few exceptions. This test is specifically crafted to assess the safety of the vehicle, guaranteeing its roadworthiness.
The Ministry of Transport (MOT) test is legally required for vehicles aged over 3 years to undergo an annual evaluation on fundamental aspects. This examination encompasses various safety measures, emissions checks, and assessments of roadworthiness.
Authorized DVSA testing facilities, staffed by DVSA trained examiners, exclusively conduct the MOT test. The Choice Garage is one such authorized facility, employing only qualified testers for MOT examinations. Unlike some other garages, we conduct all MOT tests in-house, utilizing our own technicians and facilities, without outsourcing.
Most cars and light commercial vehicles fall into the Class 4 category for MOT testing, which we are fully certified to perform. However, other vehicle types such as quads, motorcycles, goods vehicles (between 3,000-3,500kg), and those with more than 12 seats require different categories of testing, which we are not equipped or authorized to conduct. If uncertain, please consult a member of our staff.
It’s crucial not to conflate a service with an MOT test. During an MOT test, only basic areas are inspected to ensure minimum safety and roadworthiness standards. Additionally, an MOT tester is not permitted to dismantle parts of the vehicle or conduct extensive investigations. In contrast, during a service, technicians can thoroughly examine the vehicle, identifying faults or diagnosing problems before they pose safety hazards. We always advise scheduling both an annual service and MOT to maintain optimal roadworthiness, safety, and reliability for your vehicle.

An MOT test is an annual inspection required by law in the UK to ensure that vehicles meet road safety and environmental standards.

The goverments MOT scheme has a recommended sale price of £54.85. Whilst this is the advised/recommended sale price, here at The Choice Garage we currently offer a discounted rate of £49.99 per MOT. We do not currently charge for a retest if it is within the 10 working days, otherwise a full test becomes due.
The length of time an MOT takes can vary depending on the vehicle. On average an MOT is approx 40-60 minutes from start to end. Some vehicles are quicker and others may require extended time e.g. if brakes have to be tested on a test drive rather than the rollers.
If your vehicle fails its MOT test, you will receive a VT30 ‘Refusal of an MOT Test Certificate’ form listing the reasons for failure. You’ll need to rectify these issues and have a retest conducted within one month (10 working days for some minor issues).
Common reasons for MOT failures include issues with lights, brakes, tires, suspension, emissions, and structural integrity. Regular maintenance and servicing can help prevent many of these issues.
In most cases, you cannot legally drive your vehicle if it fails its MOT test unless you are driving it to a pre-booked MOT retest appointment or to a place for necessary repairs. However, you must ensure the vehicle is roadworthy and properly insured.
Some vehicles, such as historic vehicles over 40 years old or electric vehicles, may be exempt from MOT testing. Additionally, certain charities and organizations may offer discounted or free MOT tests for eligible individuals.
